Packed Column – Column-Type Pressure Vessels

Packed Column

Introduction

A Packed Column is a vertical column-type pressure vessel designed for enhancing mass transfer between vapor and liquid phases using structured or random packing materials. These columns are widely used in chemical processing, oil & gas, petrochemical, and environmental engineering for operations such as absorption, stripping, distillation, and solvent recovery.

Efficient Vapor-Liquid Contact for Mass Transfer Applications — At NORDSTONE., we manufacture packed columns engineered to deliver superior vapor–liquid interaction, stable operation, and high separation efficiency with compliance to ASME Section VIII Div.1, API, and TEMA standards.

What is a Packed Column?

A packed column uses structured or random packing to promote continuous vapor–liquid contact. Liquid flows downward through the packing while vapor rises upward, enabling efficient mass transfer. Key components include:

  • Vertical cylindrical shell
  • Packing material (structured or random)
  • Liquid distributors & redistributors
  • Vapor inlet & outlet systems
  • Demister or mist eliminator
  • Packing support plates & collection trays

Technical Features

1) Design & Construction:
  • Design Codes: ASME Sec VIII Div.1 / API / TEMA / PED
  • Packing Type:
    • Random packing (Raschig rings, Pall rings, Berl saddles)
    • Structured packing (corrugated metal/ceramic sheets)
    • High-efficiency low-pressure drop designs
  • Design Pressure:
    • Vacuum service
    • Up to 120 bar (higher on request)
  • Design Temperature: –50°C to +450°C
  • Material Grade:
    • Carbon Steel: SA516 Gr.60/70, SA106 Gr.B
    • Stainless Steel: SS304/304L, SS316/316L
    • Duplex / Super Duplex SS

    • Liquid distributors & redistributors
    • Packing support plates
    • Vapor distribution systems
    • Demisters / mist eliminators
2) Capacity Range:

Packed columns are available from small pilot units to large industrial mass-transfer towers. Designs are optimized for packing height, diameter, and vapor–liquid loading.

Typical Design Envelope

Parameter Typical Range Remarks
Diameter 0.5 m – 6 m Custom sizes available
Height 3 m – 60 m Based on packing height
Pressure Vacuum to 120 bar High-pressure designs optional
3) Nozzle & Accessories:

Each packed column includes the following as standard:

  • Feed inlet / vapor inlet nozzles
  • Liquid distributor inlet nozzles
  • Side-draw / sampling nozzles
  • Bottom liquid outlet & drain connections
  • Demister/mist eliminator access nozzles
  • Instrument nozzles (Level, Pressure, Temperature)
  • Manways / handholes for internal maintenance
4) Surface Finish:
  • External sand/grit blasting to SA 2.5
  • Anti-corrosive primer coating
  • Polyurethane / Epoxy top coat (custom colors)
  • Internal linings for corrosive and sour services
  • External insulation support rings (if required)
Functional Advantages:
  • High Mass Transfer Efficiency

Optimized packing type and liquid distribution ensure maximum surface area for vapor–liquid interaction.

  • Low Pressure Drop

Packed columns offer significantly lower pressure drop compared to trays, enabling energy-efficient operation.

  • Flexible Operation

Suitable for absorption, stripping, distillation, scrubbing, and solvent recovery processes.

  • Superior Handling of Heat-Sensitive Components

Ideal for applications where low temperature rise and minimal thermal degradation are required.
